Dear Senator,
On September 27th, we closed our food pantry.
Last month we served 882 individuals a total of nearly 8,000 meals. We have provided recipients with a choice of what would be best for their families. Volunteers from our congregation along with staff and AmeriCorps members have attempted to keep the pantry stocked with items including canned goods, dairy, meats fresh produce and hygiene products.
However, given the way our economy is going, it is not possible for us to continue this ministry. Contributions from worship attendees has decreased. Our foundation has supported the variety of ministries our congregation has engaged but that is not possible with the stock market decline resulting in a loss of $445,000.
Those changes have also resulted in notices going to staff that there will be a 20% reduction in hours and pay.
But I am also writing to confirm any suspicion you may have that what is happening to First Grace is not unique. IT IS NOT! Several congregations in Akron have merged, closed or are contemplating closing. It is happening here and it is happening across the country as houses of worship face declining revenues amidst growing needs.
Historically there has been an assumption that faith communities have served as a safety net when government and other resources have failed. That safety net is torn. People are falling through. Children and seniors are falling through. Something must change.
So, I end this with a prayer that you will work with us to make sure that people will not be going hungry in Akron and across our great nation.
Peace,
Rev. Robert J Dreese
P.S. I know that you are accustomed to the necessity of fund raising. Enclosed is an envelope should you choose to make a contribution to the reopening of our pantry.
